Timothy W

Name: Timothy

Alma Mater: Bachelor's and Master's in Aerospace Engineering, Iowa State University. Go Cyclones!

Department: Guidance Analysis Department

Can you tell us about the work you do here at The Aerospace Corporation?

I do mostly launch vehicle simulation and data analysis with an emphasis on guidance, navigation, and control systems.

Who or what inspires you? Why?

There is a push for new innovation and technologies in space. One of the more visible ones is rocket reusability, such as what SpaceX has achieved with their first-stage boosters. Being able to watch these accomplishments in my time makes me excited about the possibilities in the future.

When was the moment you realized that you wanted to make this your career?

The first time I participated in launch support in the STARS Mission Operations Center. Being part of a real-time operation is a great experience!

What work outside of your own department is Aerospace doing that excites you the most?

Probably the CubeSats that Aerospace designs and operates in orbit for technology demonstrations. There are so many cool things going on that it's hard to choose just one!

Why did you choose to work at Aerospace?

I knew even before I went to college that I wanted to get involved in the space industry. The work being done at Aerospace touches nearly every aspect of space and so it seemed like a great fit.

What advice would you give to an engineer joining The Aerospace Corporation?

Don't be afraid to branch out. There are a lot of interesting projects around the company, so don't feel like you always have to be working on the same thing year after year.
